Circuit Checklist: Ready for Track Day with your BMW?

Hey BMW drivers! Winter has only just begun, but many of us are already looking forward to the first track days of 2026. Whether it's Zandvoort, Assen, or a beautiful foreign track: a day at the track provides that ultimate driving pleasure we all live for.

Before you hit the gas, proper preparation is essential. Here's the short checklist we at BimmerElite always use for our customers. Simple, practical, and focused on safety and performance.

1. Tires

Standard street tires are fine for the highway, but they melt away on the track. Choose semi-slicks (e.g., Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, Yokohama Advan A052, Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R) or good sports tires.

Why this is crucial:

  • Much better grip in corners and under heavy braking.
  • Less wear and heat buildup.
  • Make sure they still have enough tread (at least 2-3 mm for track use).

Tip:Always check the tire temperature after a few laps – if they get too hot, adjust your driving style or pressure.

2. Tire Pressure

The correct tire pressure makes or breaks your lap times.

Our standard recommendation:

  • Cold pressure: 2.3-2.5 bar front and rear (depending on the car and tire).
  • After warming up: aim for 2.6-2.8 bar hot.
  • Always measure cold and adjust per track (Zandvoort often requires slightly higher rear pressure).

Too low pressure = overheating and wear. Too high pressure = less grip. Bring a good tire pressure gauge!

3. Brake Fluid

Brakes on the track get extremely hot. Old or wet fluid boils quickly (brake fade).

Check:

  • Color: clear yellow/green = OK, dark brown/black = replace.
  • Always replace before the season with DOT4 or DOT5.1 high-boiling-point fluid (e.g., Motul RBF600 or RBF660).

This prevents brake fade and ensures your brakes provide confidence during late apex braking.

4. Brake Pads

Check the thickness of your brake pads.

Guideline:

  • Leave at least 5-6 mm for a safe track day.
  • Use racing or performance pads (e.g., Pagid RS, EBC Yellowstuff, or Ferodo DS2500) for better bite and heat resistance.

If they are thin, replace them immediately. Nothing is more dangerous than brake failure.

5. Tightening bolts

Vibrations and high forces on the track can loosen bolts.

Always do this before a track day:

  • Wheel bolts: Tighten to 140 Nm (or factory spec for your model).
  • Suspension bolts (control arms, shock absorbers, stabilizer bars): Check and tighten with a torque wrench.

A loose bolt can ruin your day or worse.

6. Helmet

A helmet is mandatory on most tracks (ECE or SNELL approved).

Choose one that fits well and is ventilated. Also bring a balaclava to protect against sweat.

7. Fuel

For tuned BMWs (especially B58, S58), RON98 is essential.

Why:

  • Prevents pinging and knocking under high loads.
  • Better performance and cooling.

Always fill up with premium fuel (Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate, Total Excellium) and bring a jerry can if necessary.

Conclusion

With this checklist, you'll be safe and ready for an epic track day. Whether you're driving a standard M3 or a heavily tuned G80, good preparation makes the difference between a great day and problems.
