Marketing cookies and similar techniques
If you choose to consent to marketing cookies and similar data processing, our marketing partners may process and combine your interactions with our site with your interactions with other websites where they are active and where you have given permission. Based on this, assumptions can be made about the wishes and preferences you might have. Based on these assumptions, it can be determined which offers and advertisements may be most interesting to you.
Depending on our marketing strategy, which can be adjusted from time to time, we can define 'audiences' or 'segments' of groups of people who have certain (behavioral) traits in common and for that reason we would like to show our ads more often or less often. Because it is possible to keep track of whether someone has also placed an order after seeing an advertisement, for example, we can also gain insight into the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns.
On websites and services where advertisements from us or those of other advertisers are shown using marketing cookies or similar techniques, think of your favorite news site, systems are often used that allow advertisers to automatically offer amounts to show an advertisement. The ad you see is the one that has been bid for the most at that time, expecting that the product or service in the ad best suits your interests and wishes. Then the greatest chance is estimated that you will want to buy it. As an advertiser, we can also use such services to enable us to show offers and advertisements that we hope are most interesting to you.
It is important to be aware that there are many factors that determine which advertisement you can see where and when. Your interactions on our site and whether or not you give us permission for the use of marketing cookies and processing may be part of this but in many cases do not have to be decisive.
We can also use marketing cookies to tailor the content of our website as well as possible to your preferences.
To protect your privacy, we do not provide your name to our marketing partners. Your click behavior is linked to a pseudonym number (cookie ID or user ID) that our marketing partners cannot normally trace back to your further identity.
Later in this privacy statement you can consult a list of the cookies and providers we can use, by category for which you can give us permission.
Google Customer Match
If you give us permission for marketing cookies and data processing, we can also use Google Customer Match. With the help of this Google service, we try to show people who have ever bought something from us that is as relevant and interesting as possible as long as they are logged in to Google. In practice, this is something like this.
For example, if you have purchased something from us in the past 30 days (or any other period), we will try to ensure that you do not see ads for exactly the same product for a while, since you have already purchased it. When it comes to products that you often reorder from us, that may be different. From your repeated purchases, we can then deduce that you need the same product again on a regular basis. For example, with LED lamps, we can estimate that you may need more of them or will want to purchase the same or similar products on a regular basis. Furthermore, we know that some of our products go very well with others. Think of lighting for your living room and your kitchen in the same style. If you have purchased something that we think another product goes very well with, we can try to ensure that you see ads for such matching products.
It is important to understand that it is not the case that employees manually keep an eye on all your purchases for this. We use Google Customer Match to automate this process and also protect your privacy as much as possible. Technically, it works as follows.
We process the email address with which you placed an order on our site (and possibly some other details you have entered such as your phone number) into a 'hash' (a long mash of data generated by an algorithm). We then provide this hash to Google, which has also hashed the email addresses (and possibly some additional data such as phone number) of their users with the same algorithm. If you have a Google account where you used the same email address as before placing an order with us, the hash will be recognized by Google. The use of the hashes is a form of pseudonymization, which is recognized in the GDPR and other applicable privacy legislation as an important technique to protect your privacy.
As long as you are logged into your Google account, Google can take into account the settings we have introduced in Google's advertising services to show you the most relevant ads possible. Again, our settings are not the only factors that Google weighs in determining which ads you see in Google's own services and on web pages or apps that make advertising space available from or through Google. If you do not give us permission to use marketing cookies and similar techniques, the processing just described for Google Customer Match will not take place.
You can also choose in your Google account whether you want ads in Google services to be tailored to your online search and click behavior or not. The most recent link we know for this is: https://adssettings.google.com.
Google Enhanced Conversions
Another service that is enabled if you give us permission for marketing cookies and similar data processing is Google Enhanced Conversions. This service is intended to better meass the effectiveness of the ads we display by Google. If you do something after seeing an ad that is in line with the purpose of the ad, it is called a 'conversion'. Normally that is making a purchase but it can also be something else, such as subscribing to a newsletter. The challenge here is to measure as accurately as possible how effective the ad has been and at the same time protect your privacy as well as possible.
Google Enhanced Conversions helps with this, in a way that looks a bit like the process for Customer Match. Here, too, at the time of 'conversion' (usually a purchase) we make a hash of your email address (and possibly some other details that you have entered such as your phone number) that we send to Google. Google then checks whether this hash matches one of the hashes they have made of the email addresses, phone numbers and similar data from their own customer base. If you were logged into your Google account when you viewed an ad from us, the hash can be used to check how much time there was between the purchase (or other conversion) and seeing the ad and thus determine how likely it is that the ad was effective.
Email marketing
If you have subscribed to our newsletter, you will receive (weekly) emails from us with offers and information that we try to make as interesting as possible for you. In doing so, we use technology that allows us to know if you are opening our messages and which hyperlinks in the email you click on. We analyze such information to check whether our emails are widely read.
