BMW Winter Tips: Keep Your Car in Top Condition 2026
Winter has truly arrived in Helmond and the surrounding area. These simple tips will help you keep your BMW in top condition: from the battery and windshield wipers to the rubber, tires, and salt protection.
Hey BMW drivers! Winter is in full swing: frost in the mornings, wet roads, road salt, and temperatures that can be tough on your battery and tires. But with a few quick checks and simple actions, your BMW will remain reliable and protected.
Here are the 7 tips we use ourselves and that many customers use. No complicated tasks, just practical steps for the cold months.
1. Check the battery's condition
Cold is a BMW battery's biggest enemy. At subzero temperatures, the capacity quickly drops by 30-50%.
What to do:
- Measure the voltage (must be at least 12.6 V when the car is off).
- Use a multimeter or have it checked at a garage.
- If the car has been parked for a long time: connect a trickle charger/battery charger.
A weak battery causes starting problems, especially in the morning. Better to check now than be stranded in the snow.
2. Top up the windshield wiper antifreeze fluid.
Frozen nozzles or a cloudy windshield make driving dangerous.
Tip:
- Use windshield wiper fluid with antifreeze down to at least -20°C or -25°C.
- Empty the reservoir as much as possible and refill it completely with winter fluid.
This prevents frozen pipes and keeps your vision clear during rain and slush.
3. Treat the door seals with silicone spray.
Doors that freeze to the seals are a classic winter problem.
Solution:
- Spray silicone spray (not WD-40!) on all door, trunk, and hatch seals.
- Wipe away any excess with a cloth.
The seals remain flexible, don't freeze, and the door opens easily, even after a night of frost.
4. Inflate your tires by an additional 0.1 - 0.2 bar.
In cold weather, tire pressure drops naturally (approximately 0.1 bar per 10°C drop).
Advice:
- Inflate your tires 0.1 to 0.2 bar higher than normal (cold pressure).
- Check weekly, as correct pressure provides better grip and prevents wear.
This helps on wet and cold roads, especially with summer tires that haven't been replaced yet.
5. Consider winter tires if you haven't already.
If you're still driving on summer tires: switch now.
Why winter tires are crucial:
- Much better grip below 7°C on wet and icy roads.
- Shorter braking distance and more stable steering.
- Lower insurance and fine risk in winter conditions.
For BMWs (especially rear-wheel drive), this is one of the best safety investments.
6. Clean the underside of your car and remove salt residue.
Road salt corrodes your chassis, suspension, and exhaust.
Quick action:
- Regularly rinse the underside (at a car wash with underbody cleaning or even with high-pressure cleaner).
- Focus on the wheel arches, sills, and chassis.
This will significantly extend the life of your BMW and maintain its value.
Conclusion
With these simple winter tips: check the battery, top up antifreeze, protect the rubber, inflate tires, consider winter tires, and remove salt residue. Keep your BMW reliable and protected all winter long. Stay warm, drive safely, and share your best winter trick in the comments! Which tip do you already use, or what did I forget?
