BMW Winter Must-Dos: Grip, Fast Warm-Up, and Clean Windshield

Hey BMW driver! Winter is creeping up: no snow yet, but frost in the mornings, wet roads, and road salt that damages your paint. That calls for preparation. No expensive gadgets or unnecessary mods, just the three things that really make a difference when it gets cold and wet.

These are the must-dos every petrolhead should do before the first frost hits. Simple, effective, and immediately applicable.

1. Winter Tires: Better Grip on Wet Roads of 5°C and Below

As soon as the temperature drops below 7°C, summer tires lose their grip rapidly. Winter tires are made of softer rubber that remains flexible in cold weather and has more sipes for better traction on wet and icy roads.

Why this is priority number one:

  • Shorter braking distance: on wet asphalt at 5°C, winter tires allow you to brake up to 10-15 meters faster than summer tires.
  • More control: less chance of skidding when accelerating, braking, or cornering.
  • Safer in rain and frost: the tread disperses water and slush more effectively.

For BMW drivers (especially RWD models like the 3 Series, 4 Series, or Z4), this isn't an option, but a must. Preferably choose rims that are slightly narrower than your summer set for better performance in snow.

2. Windshield Washer Fluid: Top Up Antifreeze

Nothing is more frustrating than a frozen washer nozzle or a windshield that won't clear because the fluid has frozen.

What to do:

  • Empty your reservoir as much as possible (or use it until it's low).
  • Fill with windshield washer fluid that is frost-free down to minus 20°C (-4°F) or lower (check the label: -25°C (-13°F) is ideal for the Netherlands).
  • Choose a fluid with good cleaning properties against salt and insect residue.

This keeps your vision clear, prevents frozen washer nozzles, and saves you a lot of frustration on cold mornings.

3. Defrosting Spray: 30 Seconds to Clear Your Windshield of Ice

Frost on your windshield? Instead of scraping with a plastic scraper (which will scratch), grab a good defrosting spray.

Why this is so handy:

  • Spray on, wait 30 seconds to a minute, and wipe off the ice.
  • Also works on side windows, mirrors, and locks.
  • Prevents damage to the windshield or wipers from hard scraping.

Keep a bottle in your trunk or door pocket. It's a small investment that makes every winter morning a lot more relaxing.

Conclusion

Frost, wet roads, and salt: winter is here, but with winter tires for grip, antifreeze windshield washer fluid for clear visibility, and a bottle of defroster spray for quick starts, you'll stay safe and relaxed on the road.
