Hidden Menu BMW G-Series: Oil & Cooling Temperature Without App

Hi G-Series drivers! Last week we talked about the secret menus in the F-Series. This week, it's the turn of the newer G-Series models (G20, G21, G22, G23, G26, G30, G31, G32, G80, G82, G83, G87, and more).

Just like the older generations, there are built-in hidden menus in the instrument panel. These give you instant access to valuable real-time data like oil and coolant temperature, battery voltage, dyno-style power displays, and system tests. And the best part: no OBD adapter, app, or laptop required.

Step-by-step access to the hidden menu

This method works on almost all G-series models with a digital cluster (from ~2019).

  1. Turn on the ignition (engine does not need to be running).
  2. Press and hold the BC button (Board Computer button on the left turn signal lever). → After a few seconds, the hidden menu will appear on the display.
  3. Scroll or press and hold until you reach Unlock.
  4. Enter the sum of the last 5 digits of your chassis number (VIN).
    • For example: last 5 digits are 67890 → sum = 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 0 = 30. Enter 30 (scroll with the button, hold to confirm).
  5. You're in! Now you can navigate to:
    • Oil temperature (real-time, ideally 90–110°C).
    • Coolant temperature.
    • Battery voltage (12V battery status).
    • Dyno display (power/torque in real-time, super cool on the track).
    • Various system tests (lights, sensors, fuel level, etc.).

Tip: On some LCI models or iDrive 8/9, the menu may be called something different (e.g., "Service Mode" or "Engineering Menu"), but the BC button method is the default.

Why this menu is so valuable

  • Real-time monitoring: See exactly when your oil is warm enough for sporty driving or tuning.
  • Battery check: Useful for cold starts in winter (like now in January 2026).
  • Dyno-like display: View live horsepower and Nm while driving, perfect for track days or tuning checks.
  • Diagnosis without a garage: Test sensors and systems yourself, saving time and money.

Many G20, G80, and G82 owners use this daily to keep their car in top condition.

Conclusion

The G-series, just like the F-series, has its own hidden treasures. With just a few seconds of pressing the BC button, you can access information normally only seen by garages. Super handy and fun to experiment with.

Have you tried it on your G-series yet? What temperatures did you see, or did you discover another cool feature? Share it in the comments; we're curious about your experiences!
